The book right here, if you haven’t read much this year, if you don’t know which book to read next, you need to get this book. Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt is the portrait of what it means to be transgender in America. This book was a complete eye opener for me. I am a supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I still learned a heck of a lot from this book. Nicole Maines and her family are showcased in this book, it tells the story of how she was born a boy named Wyatt with a twin brother named Jonas. Though the two boys were identical, it was clear from almost two years old that Wyatt was not exactly Wyatt, he acted like a girl, wanted to dress like a girl, and told everyone that he was a girl. Eventually, as he grew older, his parents let him transition, and begin calling himself Nicole. The journey from being baby Wyatt to teenaged Nicole was not an easy one, but it was worth it.
This book is not just a story about a family, it is an educational book as well. There are chapters dedicated to how the brain works in a transgenders person’s body, and how scientifically it is possible to be born in a body that doesn’t match your gender. It was something that made me think, and I love books like that.
While reading this book, I would take breaks to go on youtube and watch videos about the Maines family. They are really courageous, well-spoken, and funny. Nicole is a sweet girl, who knows exactly who she is and what she wants out of life. She is a great voice for the transgender community, and she also is just a really cool girl. I absolutely loved this book, and I think that if you are the type of person that wants to learn more about what it means to be transgender, this is definitely a book you should check out. You will learn so much, and even if you already know a lot, you will definitely learn more from this book. This book is also great for people who may be struggling with their identity, or know someone who is. It will give you a great insight into the mind of a transgender person, and most of all it will make you realize that transgender people are people as well. They have feelings, heart, and just want to be treated like everyone else. Being transgender shouldn’t be scary for anyone, it should be something that is accepted, and backed by the people of this country.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book was sent to me by Random House, so I just want to say thank you for sending me such a lovely book!
