From the very first sentence of The Darkening by Chandler Mcgrew, this book freaked me out. The main character Lucy is seemingly kidnapped in the middle of the night, and then escapes her captors. Only to return home to find hell, yet again. The secrets and mystery in this book are well placed, well written, and delivered to the reader with the perfect amount of surprise.
With the finding of her late father’s diary, and then the blackout that took over the entire world, Lucy knows theres a secret that she can’t quite grasp, but she doesn’t have time to figure it out quite yet.
Then comes Dylan, who keeps having dreams that he can’t remember, and he keeps waking up in areas of his home that he didn’t remember falling asleep in.
These two people don’t know each other, but soon they will. They eventually team up to fight a deadly battle against a secret organization that is planning on taking over the world. Dylan and Lucy had no idea that they had the power to fight these people, especially during the Rapture, but when they get together they are very important pieces to the puzzle.
This book was really fast to read, and it made me feel the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The only problem I had with this book is that I needed the big picture. The world is ending, so there’s gotta be something else going on right? In other countries, maybe other cities, I wanted to hear about people freaking out, about how the world came crashing down (not that I want this to happen, but I really feel like it would have made the book even scarier), other than that little tidbit, this book was right up there with the great horrors of today. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
