Timothy is an orphan, who lives in the Dreams and Hopes home where he has lived for practically his entire life. Timothy Other The Boy who Climbed Marzipan Mountain by L. Sydney Abel is a dark and unsettling, yet redemptive middle grade novel. Timothy’s caretaker passes away, which means that his home is going to be taken away as well. Instead of going along with what his new caretaker has to say, Timothy decides to take it upon himself and run away to find something better.
That’s when the fun begins. While escaping to Marzipan Mountain, Timothy runs into several different creatures and characters that he may have never known. Picture a world like Wonderland, or the world from The Spiderwick Chronicles (one of my favorites), and this is exactly what you will get when you read this book! I thought this story was enchanting, energetic and fun.
When Timothy goes looking for his past, he seems to find much more. I love this book, and I think that it will be a great addition to any child’s collection. It is a little bit dark, but the ending is pure wonder and I think children and parents a like will get a kick out of this book. I give it 5 out of 5 stars, I also received this from the author in exchange for an honest review.
