What a wonderful, wonderful book to teach children about feelings and mental illness! I cannot believe I found this book on Netgalley. Not Today, Celeste by Liza Stevens is absolutely perfect. This is a book to teach children about depression, and I feel that it is told in a way that is understandable, compassionate and real. This is definitely a book for older children, as I don’t think my three year old would understand, but for anyone who has a family member dealing with depression-this is a great book to help kids understand.
Celeste is a cute little dog, who loves her owner very much. She loves him so much, that she doesn’t quite understand why he all of a sudden doesn’t want to play with her, and sometimes forgets to feed her. Then one day a neighbor stops by and explains to Celeste that it’s not her owners fault, and it’s not her fault, but sometimes people have feelings that they don’t understand, and sometimes people can be depressed.
What I liked about this book, was after the story, it had tips to help kids understand depression even more. I have read children’s book about feelings, but never one that discussed a mental issue like depression. I found it to be quite age appropriate and also informative. I definitely give this book 5 out of 5 stars!
