Even before the death of his wife, Charlie Goldwyn was a hard working lawyer, but now that a video of him talking bad about his clients goes viral, he loses his job and finds what’s really important in life. This Was Not the Plan by Cristina Alger is this seasons perfect family drama read. I couldn’t put it down, and I bet you won’t want to either.
Charlie and his wife had the perfect marriage, and then she perished in a plane crash. Now Charlie is a single father of a 5 year old named Caleb, who thankfully has help from his twin sister, Zadie. He needs help as much as possible, because he spends about 100 hours a week at work, which means that his son Caleb doesn’t get the attention that he needs from his father.
Charlie is so close to becoming partner at his law firm, that he doesn’t even want to take a day off to play with his son. On his way to family dinner, he gets pulled to yet another office party. That’s where things go wrong. Charlie drinks too much, and starts yammering on about how sometimes being a lawyer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The smart phones come out, and eventually that video ends up on Youtube. This means Charlie loses his job, and it also means he gets to spend more time with Caleb.
Being home with his boy is difficult at first, because Charlie isn’t used to doing the parental business, but soon the boys fall into step with each other and they realize that they need each other more than ever. Then Charlie learns that his sister is getting married, which means she won’t be around to help as much as she used to, now he has to figure out how he’s going to make money, be a single dad, and get on with his life with his late wife gone.
This book will crack you up, break your heart, and melt you all in one chapter. With flashbacks of Charlie and how he and his wife got together, their marriage and the birth of Charlie, it really brings the story full circle, plus the surprise ending was a really magical experience. You will definitely be rooting for this precious family as you read the book! I had a great time with this one, I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I received this book from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
